Our Curriculum
With specialist teaches in all areas, Shireland Collegiate Academy offers students a stimulating learning environment which combines tradition with innovation with learning at the heart of everything we do. Academic achievement and enrichment opportunities are both valued and available. Y7 Mathematics Day at Warwick Castle, Y10 Euro Disney trip and our annual adventure week at Plas Gwynant, Snowdonia, all impact on students, curriculum work and the development of their social skills.
All classrooms have interactive whiteboards and computer access for students via our Learning Gateway. We have the technologies available to support both our staff and students.
We seek to build on children's prior learning. Well established relationships with our local primary schools, weekly Y6 homework clubs and developing curriculum links are all key to continuity of learning. The revised Y7 model and curriculum which started in September 2009 has strengthened this continuity and deepened individualised learning to ensure that no child is left behind.
The Academy's extended school's programme offers study support and enrichment activities throughout the year. Saturday mornings are lively, fun and productive - want to be a Bollywood Dancer? Learn how to be a DJ? Or perhaps you would just like to improve your English and mathematics grades - all of these can be catered for outside the formal curriculum.
In the last few years we have developed a number of systems and structures which enable our students to achieve at their highest personal level, particularly in their public examinations: assertive mentoring, academic coaches and focused study support have all helped to raise attainment in Y11. The curriculum post-16 is specifically tailored to help all students who wish to go further and higher to have access to provision at the level which will enable them to progress with their studies. This they are doing with increasing personal and academic success.
Sporting AchievementWhatever your interest, the PE, Sport and Leisure Team will offer something for you. Individual performance, team games, friendly or competitive - it's all available. Inter-house rivalry is very apparent at any sporting occasion, but Sports Day brings out the pride and competitiveness in all students. It is a wonderful occasion complete with cheerleaders/ banners and of course exceptional talent on track and in field.
There are a wide range of sports teams across the Key Stages which have achieved huge success. Girls' and boys' teams are flourishing - football, basketball, athletics, are well-established. But what about Korfball? We try to provide opportunities for our students to participate in new sports and this was introduced in the last year. Having PE staff who have performed at national and international levels gives Academy students access to immense talent and experience. |
